Genetically Diverse Native Seed at The Ness Lake Forest Nursery

IFS in collaboration with Symbios Research and Restoration (Symbios) are in the initial stages of producing seed for several species of native grasses for use on revegetation projects in northern British Columbia. This seed is genetically diverse and has been selected through the course of a seven-year research project. There are many benefits to using genetically diverse native seed mixes matched to the areas disturbed by industrial activities or natural causes. These benefits include:

  • Maintaining ecosystem functions, such as, nutrient cycling, soil erosion control, and balancing populations of pest species
  • Maintaining ecosystem structure
  • Providing a variety of ecological niches for other local life forms
  • Providing genetic diversity for the future

Native seed produced by IFS from its Ness Lake Forest Nursery will be genetically diverse and hence most compatible with the principles of ecological restoration and bioregional sustainability.

If you wish additional information regarding native seed availability please contact Bill Williams or Andrea Eastham @ our Prince George office.
